Learn How to Get Rid of Raccoons

Many homeowners may find that they have a raccoon problem. Raccoons can cause significant damage to households, so it is important to get rid of raccoons as soon as possible. These animals can be quite clever, and homeowners will need to go through several steps to ensure that they can repel these creatures for good.

Raccoons are native to North America. They grow between two to three feet in length, and weigh anywhere from 10 to 30 pounds. Raccoons are nocturnal. In their natural habitat, they will emerge from their den at night, and search for all different kinds of foods, from fruit to nuts and crayfish to frogs. In urban environments, however, these omnivorous animals will often frequent garbage cans and compost piles in search of food. Raccoons are identified by their grayish coat and black "mask" over their eyes.

In the wild, raccoons will build their burrows in hollow trees, brush piles, and underground. In an urban setting, raccoons will attempt to make burrows under porches, patios, and other structures. They also can cause damage to roofs, as a nesting female may rip off shingles or roof ventilators in her search for a good nesting spot. In addition to the damage they make, raccoons can also carry diseases like raccoon roundworms and rabies.

There are several steps that can be taken to repel raccoons. Commercial repellents have little effect on raccoons, although electrified fences can ensure that these creatures will not invade your home or garden. Adding electrified wire to trees can also work. Homeowners may also simply attempt to reduce available food by adding metal garbage cans with secure lids and making sure pet food is not left outside. Sealing any open space under structures with galvanized mesh will also keep raccoons from nesting.
